Assignments

Each week, you should consult the module for that week in Canvas.  The module will start with “Directions,” which you should always consult for instructions about the lessons.  Typically, you will be responsible for reading a certain chapter from your text, College Success, and for reading the lecture notes for that module - in the form of Word documents or PowerPoint presentations.  Assignments for the module will revolve around a range of activities related to the chapters.  For most modules, you will have two weeks to complete the assignments.

Discussions - Class participation:

Your stories and thoughts matter!  One of the goals of this class is to create connections with your peers.  Not only will you learn through your own self- assessment, but you will have the opportunity to contribute to your classmates' insight by sharing your own ideas and thoughts.  I welcome your questions throughout our class!

Active participation and involvement in discussions is important in college courses.  For online courses, we participate and discuss ideas by posting to Canvas.  You will be required to post two times:  once in answer to the discussion question and another time in response to any of your classmates’ postings for that discussion.  If you are responding to a classmate, use the “reply to” button, so we will know to whom you are responding.  You will receive up to 5 points for your original posting and up to 5 points for your response to a classmate.  Only thoughtful responses to your classmates will receive points – in other words, don’t just say, “I agree.”  Give reasons for what you are saying.  ***Up to 5 bonus points can be earned if you respond to classmates more than the required one time.

Please review the Start Here Module in our Canvas course for more information about online communication and netiquette.

Journals:

The journals will give you an opportunity to write down your thoughts about what you are learning or experiencing.  Reflective journal writing is different from other academic writing.

Your journals will be graded on whether you give thoughtful, insightful answers, applying the material we have covered for the week to your own experiences.   Since most questions will be seeking your opinion or asking you to mull over lessons or things you have learned, there are usually no right or wrong answers.  Points may be deducted, unless otherwise indicated, for journals not approximately 250 words in length (one page, double-spaced) or if entries do not answer all the questions.  Points will also be deducted if “text messaging” shortcuts are used or chat language (“u” for “you”, etc.)

Academic Wellness Plan:

The Career and Academic Wellness Plan will require a meeting, so you will need to plan ahead.  For this assignment you need to meet with your assigned advisor or other campus representative.  In order to meet with your advisor, you will need to make an appointment at least two to three weeks in advance.  If you have difficulty making it to campus, you can make a phone appointment, but this appointment will still have to be secured at least two to three weeks in advance.  Call 440-366-4032 for assistance in making an appointment as soon as possible.

Quizzes:

Quizzes will be given during the weeks for which there are reading assignments.  They will be on the content of the book and lectures.   There will be a combination of multiple choice and true-false questions.

Career Pathway:

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about a Program and Career Pathway.  To enhance career development, students will complete a MyPlan project, Career Exploration Project and Pathway summary assignment.

assignments – Late or missing work

Each week, all work is due by Midnight (closes at 11:59 PM) on Tuesday.    If you need to submit a late assignment, please contact me to develop a plan for completion.  The following information expands on the various requirements due, for which you will receive points.

attendance reporting

Two-week Course Attendance Reporting

Students will be reported as attending for registration and financial aid purposes as a result of completing Discussion 1 to introduce yourself to the class within the first week.

Important Notice for Students Receiving Financial Aid: Your financial aid payments depend on your commencement of attendance and active participation in this course throughout the term.  If you are receiving financial aid, you are expected to read and understand the college’s policy which can be found in the LCCC College Catalog: http://catalog.lorainccc.edu/  If a student enrolls in a class and is reported as not attending by the class instructor, the student will be automatically dropped from the class.

COVID -19 INSRUCTION AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

 LCCC’s COVID-19 guidelines:

LCCC COVID taskforce met and has recommended that we reinstitute mandatory masking requirements for everyone when indoors at any Lorain County Community College facility regardless of vaccination status.  Masks will be provided to anyone who may need them.  Additionally, we still encourage everyone to wash hands, maintain a safe distance and stay home if you are not feeling well.  The LCCC COVID Taskforce will continue to monitor the status of the virus in our community along with evolving recommendations and guidance from leading health authorities and evaluate the need for masks and other safety measures on a weekly basis.

Student Interaction and participation

Academic Integrity:  Students are expected to display ethical behavior at all times.  Cheating or plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing will automatically fail the assignment.  See the Student Code of Conduct:

http://catalog.lorainccc.edu/Campus+Policies/StudentConduct.htm

Respect of Diversity

At times, students may express varying opinions on topics posted on the discussion board.   It is important that we maintain an intellectual culture that is accessible, disciplined and free and that encourages safe expression of diverse beliefs.  By our behavior with one another, we endorse a culture of diversity, celebrating the uniqueness of the individual and developing our understanding of differences in thought, gender, race, ethnicity, age, spiritual beliefs, sexual orientation and physical and mental abilities.  In order to establish this environment, students are expected to treat each other and the instructor with kindness and act in a civil manner at all times.  Thus, disruptive, disrespectful, discriminatory, harassing, violent and/or threatening behavior is explicitly prohibited.

What You Can Expect from Me

  1. You can expect that I will monitor and grade your discussion posts, journals and projects. Grades for each week’s journals and discussions will be submitted to the grade book by one week after they are due.
  2. You can expect that I will respond to your email. Unless I have an emergency, I make it a habit to respond to emails within 24 hours; weekends vary.
  3. You can expect that I will give you feedback and suggestions for becoming more successful at LCCC.
  4. You can expect that I will be fair, honest, and involved in your learning.

LCCC Institutional Policies

LCCC’s Attendance Policy

According to LCCC’s Attendance Policy, “The class instructor will report the commencement of student class attendance after the census date of the class session.  In a distance education context, documenting that a student has logged into an online class is not sufficient, by itself, to demonstrate academic attendance by the student. The class instructor must demonstrate that a student participated in class or was otherwise engaged in an academically related activity, such as by contributing to an online discussion or initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a course-related question. The class instructor will determine what constitutes commencement of attendance and should record their policy in the class syllabus.

If a student enrolls in a class and is reported as not attending by the class instructor, the student will be automatically dropped from the class.  Procedures governing class attendance at LCCC allow each faculty member to establish attendance regulations, which she/he deems necessary for her/his particular course.

If attendance becomes impossible, students must officially withdraw from the course.  Withdrawal procedures are described in the College Catalog enrollment section.”  For further information about student responsibility for attendance, coursework and tuition, go to LCCC’s Attendance Policy at https://www.lorainccc.edu/policies/campus-policies/attendance/

midterm grades and FAW’s

Midterm Grades

According to LCCC’s Grading System Policy, Midterm Grades are issued as follows, “Midterm grades reflect the students’ progress through the 50 percent point in time of the term. In some cases, they represent about half of the grade in the course. In other cases, much of the coursework is yet to be completed and graded. The intent of the midterm grade is to inform students of their current progress to date in the term in an effort to help them stay enrolled in class and improve their success rate. If students have questions concerning their midterm grade, they should contact their course instructor.

Midterm grades will be reported by the faculty member at the 50 percent point of the term for all courses except those considered dynamically dated (sessions less than five weeks in length). Students who are not actively pursuing course completion may receive a grade of FAW and may be withdrawn from the course at a 0 percent refund of tuition and fees. Midterm grades will be available to students online through their MyCampus account.”  For more information access  LCCC’s Grading System Policy at https://www.lorainccc.edu/policies/academic-standards-and-regulations/grading-system/

Failure Administrative Withdrawal

LCCC’s Failure Administrative Withdrawal Policy states, “Students are expected to be ‘actively pursuing course completion’ and participating in the class throughout the semester. Through the midterm grade process, faculty may initiate a Failure Administrative Withdrawal grade of FAW for those students who are not actively participating in the course and who are not providing evidence of course completion. ‘Active pursuit of course completion’ is a combination of attendance, participation, completion of assignments and other activities outlined in the course syllabus. Please note: The ‘pursuit’ measure only applies to effort, not grades – so a student who is showing up and taking tests, but failing them, would not receive an FAW grade and would remain in the class.

Students who receive the FAW grade will have failed the course, owe the course tuition and fees and be administratively withdrawn from the course once midterm grades are posted. The FAW grade will be reflected on the student’s official LCCC transcript and will be calculated as an F grade with 0.00 credit point per semester hour. Students who believe they have received the FAW grade in error should contact the course instructor. Students have the right to appeal all grades and details on the appeal process can be found in Grade and Course Expectation and Appeals section of the Grading System page.” View LCCC’s Failure Administrative Withdrawals page at https://www.lorainccc.edu/admissions-and-enrollment/withdrawals/

Success in this course requires you to commence attendance and participate in course activities regularly and continuously.  You are expected to participate in the class by completing and submitting required course activities such as homework assignments, exams, essays, group projects, and other coursework. Students who do not participate in class for two consecutive weeks prior to the midterm, who fail to turn in required coursework during that period, and who fail to withdraw themselves from the course may be administratively withdrawn with an FAW midterm grade at a 0% refund of tuition and fees.  This grade will appear on your transcript and impact your GPA just as an F would.  Note: Students will not be issued an FAW grade for turning in coursework that fails to earn a passing grade.  Please contact me if you have any extenuating circumstances that prevent you from actively participating in the course.

student code of conduct - LCCC

This classroom will maintain an environment conducive to academic pursuit and achievement, as outlined in LCCC’s Code of Conduct. Students are expected to adhere to the rules, regulations, and policies set forth in this Code, especially those related to academic misconduct and/or dishonesty, plagiarism, and classroom behavior. The complete Code of Conduct is available online at https://www.lorainccc.edu/policies/campus-policies/code-of-conduct/

withdrawals and FAW’s

Withdrawals

The last day to withdraw from this course is Friday, November 12, 2021. According to LCCC’s Withdrawal policy, “The last day to withdraw from a regularly scheduled semester class is Friday of the 12th week of the semester. Please complete all steps to withdraw from a course: https://www.lorainccc.edu/campus-technology/withdraw-from-a-course/  Withdrawal from the College consists of withdrawing from all enrolled courses. Students who withdraw from all courses cease to be LCCC students for the semester from which they have withdrawn Withdrawal from the College consists of withdrawing from all enrolled courses. Students who withdraw from all courses cease to be LCCC students for the semester from which they have withdrawn.
A student who stops attending any class without following the withdrawal procedure continues to be enrolled with the exception of those students who have been issued a Failure Administrative Withdrawal (FAW) grade. For withdrawn classes, a grade will be assigned and no refund of instructional or of any other fees will be considered.
Withdrawals from credit courses offered differently than the traditional semester calendar will be calculated proportionately to and consistent with institutional policy.”   View LCCC’s Withdrawal page at https://www.lorainccc.edu/admissions-and-enrollment/withdrawals/ for the policy explanation and Course Withdrawal instructions.

Administrative Withdrawals

According to LCCC’s Attendance policies,  Administrative Withdrawals are only considered when an extenuating circumstance (that can be documented):

  1. a) interferes with a student’s ability to attend class—resulting in an inordinate number of absences, or b) prevents a student from meeting the established course withdrawal deadline.

A petition for an administrative withdrawal from a course must be submitted in writing.  Documentation that substantiates the reason for the request must be attached to the petitionOriginal documents that have been issued by a third-party institution (medical documents, court documents, a statement from one’s employer, etc.) are considered to be acceptable forms of documentation.  Documentation should be signed, dated, and written on the institution’s letterhead.  All documentation will be returned once the request has been processed.

The following items constitute acceptable forms of documentation (including but not limited to):

  • Court documents
  • Medical documents
  • Signed and dated statement from one’s employer/supervisor (written on letterhead)
  • Signed and dated statement from one’s physician (written on letterhead)
  • Document issued by a third-party institution (i.e. – school, hospital, company, etc. written on letterhead)
  • Documents that have been faxed directly to LCCC from the issuing institution

The following items constitute unacceptable forms of documentation (including but not limited to):

  • Written note from a relative, friend, neighbor, co-worker, etc.
  • Documents that have not been signed/dated or not printed on letterhead
  • Documents that do not establish a connection or relationship to the individual requesting the administrative withdrawal (i.e. – medical document that does specifically indicate that student serves as primary caregiver for patient, etc.)

An administrative withdrawal will not be granted if the documentation does not substantiate the reason that was presented as the basis for the request.  Approval of the request will be at the discretion of the Dean of the Division from which the course originates.  Additionally, it should be noted that the submission of a request for an administrative withdrawal, does not guarantee that the request will be approved.
